Connect to tabular server

This section details the steps for connecting a new Power BI report to a tabular server and database. This can be useful when using a template report provided by Pro-Sapien, or starting with a blank report.

Before you start

Parameters

The following values will be provided by Pro-Sapien:

  • {Tabular-Server-Address}
  • {Tabular-Model-Name}

Connect to tabular server

Open or create PBIX file

It is recommend that the PBIX file name includes a reference to the purpose or environment e.g. "UAT". The PBIX file name is the default name that will be applied when the report is published to Power BI Service.

  1. Open PBIX file in Power BI Desktop, or create a new blank report and save
  2. Navigate to Get data -> More

  1. Select Azure -> Azure Analysis Services database
  2. Click on Connect

Populate server and database

  1. Server: populate with {Tabular-Server-Address}
  2. Database: populate with {Tabular-Model-Name}
  3. Type: select Connect live
  4. Click on OK or Connect

Authenticate if prompted

  1. Click on Microsoft Account
  2. Click on Sign in (if not already signed-in) and sign-in using company credentials

Connect

  1. Click on OK or Connect

Select server if prompted

  1. Click on the server in the Navigator window
  2. Click on OK

Refresh

  1. Click on Refresh in the toolbar to ensure all report data is refreshed
